Another Municipality falls from TMC's grip as Bankura Mayor resigns

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another significant setback in West Bengal's urban governance as Bankura Municipality Mayor Alka Sen Majumdar suddenly resigned from her post on Wednesday. Accompanied by a few close aides, she formally submitted her resignation letter to the Bankura Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate. This high-profile exit marks the second major urban body collapse for the party in the district, following the recent, identical resignation of Sonamukhi Municipality Mayor Santosh Mukherjee, triggering intense political speculation across the region.

Speaking to reporters immediately after her resignation, Alka Sen Majumdar downplayed rumors of an internal rebellion, claiming she had served her designated term with absolute sincerity. She stated that her decision to step down was driven by a mix of personal reasons and a deep respect for the party's overarching organizational decisions. Despite relinquishing the mayoral chair, she emphasized that she remains a loyal foot soldier of the party and will continue to fulfill any grassroots responsibilities assigned to her by the top leadership.

Alka Sen Majumdar originally assumed the mayoral chair back in 2022 following a decisive municipal electoral victory by the Trinamool Congress. However, her tenure was progressively plagued by a series of administrative controversies, public dissatisfaction over stalled development projects, and vocal rebellion from within her own ward councilors. Local political observers note that the municipal board has faced immense external pressure and structural instability ever since the recent political power shift in the state government.
